Gmail accounts are the lifeblood of Android devices. They are the basic element on which these devices function. The Gmail account however sometimes needs to be removed. You might want to remove the Gmail account because you might be giving the device to someone else. Another reason could be that you might want to switch the Gmail account. Removing the Gmail account is not a lengthy process at all. It is simple and easy.
You may later re-enter the Gmail account later. But it is important to know what happens when you remove the Gmail account. Firstly, you will lose the access to apps that were previously running on your smartphone. Google Play Store is completely running on the basis of the Gmail account so the purchased content will also be gone. Other data that is linked to this account, for example, your images and calendar information will not be accessed anymore.
Step by step method to remove the Gmail account is given below. This method is applicable to all Android devices, may it be Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi or Google etc.
Basic Method to Remove Gmail Account
- Go to Settings and tap
- Tap Google and click on the Gmail account that you need to remove.
- Tap the three dots visible on the right side and a menu will open. From there select Remove Account.
- Tap Confirm and your account will be removed.
Step One – Navigate to Settings > Account
This is the first step during which you are supposed to go to the Settings in your Android phone and tap Accounts. Here you might come across an option called Accounts and Sync which pretty much means the same thing.
If you accidentally tap Google from the main Settings menu you might end up literally deleting your Gmail account. So be careful while selecting Accounts or Accounts and Sync.
Step Two – Select the Gmail Account to be Removed
Once the Accounts menu is opened, you will have to look for Google in the displayed list. Tap Google and a list of linked accounts will open. Here you will pick the specific account that you plan on removing. Once the account is tapped, another list will be displayed where you will see the Sync menu for that Account.
Step Three – Turning Sync Off or Completely Removing the Gmail Account
An available option is that you can stop getting emails and notifications on your smartphone but still let the Gmail account stay connected. This can be done by turning off the synchronization settings.
However, if you want to completely remove the Gmail account from your smartphone proceed to the overflow menu. Overflow menu is basically those three dots that you see in the right corner of the screen of the Android phone. Here you will have to tap Remove Account.
Step Four – Confirming the Removal of your Gmail Account
Now, you will be presented with an option to confirm the removal. You will be able to either Cancel or Remove Account. Tap Remove Account.
Encountering Problems in Removal?
The step by step instructions provided above is generally applicable to smartphones from all Android companies. However, it is natural to encounter some problems during the removal process. Generally, problems arise when you want to remove the primary account from your device. A good idea is to add another account before removing the Main account.
If it still doesn’t work, a factory reset might help. But you need to be careful that a factory reset will lead to all data being lost so you need to back your data up first.
